What fun I had with my friends, the "Media Mavens"!

Pam Pearson, Cathi Hatch, Nicole Vogel
Yesterday, Nicole Vogel, Founder and Publisher of SagaCity Media (Seattle Met Magazine, Portland Monthly Magazine plus 25 other magazine publications) and Pam Pearson, General Manager of Q-13 FOX TV and JOE TV in Seattle and NW 32 TV in Portland joined me at my home to taste wines together for our new Virtual Vino LIVE online shows.

Brian Calvert & Cathi
It was a blind tasting (though our moderator, Brian Calvert, kept saying that "We were blindly tasting . . ." which was not true!) of three separate Sauvignon Blancs.  Our job was to taste each wine, select a favorite and then try to guess the retail price of each wine without yet seeing what it actually was.  We each selected charities of choice and a portion of sales made to online viewers of the wines that we tasted are donated to the charities which we choose.  Yesterday, we chose Junior Achievement of Washington and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra

It is also a good deal for the wine buyer because they get an automatic 20% discount from the retail price and it is great for the wineries because they have a chance to introduce their Northwest wines to some potential new buyers.

Nicole, Cathi, ZiZi, Pam
Most importantly, we had a wonderful time while tasting some delicious, affordably priced wines together.  The show is focused on showcasing wines at a retail price of less than $75.   Brian, whose role is to explain the show's format and move the process forward and keep us on track was hard-pressed to get a word in edgewise since we were having so much fun together!  This started before we had even tasted one sip of wine.

If you would like to see the 30 minute Sauvigon Blanc show or even just a portion of it, you can go to Virtual Vino LIVE Sauvignon Blanc Show.  Do let me or our "behind the scenes producer" Blaine Millet know what you think and be sure to share this blog post with anyone else that you think might want to support the charities and buy wine.
Brian with the Show Producer
& Man Behind the Camera, Blaine Millet

Also, my little Yorkshire Terrier, ZiZi keeps putting in a fleeting appearance throughout the show.  How many times did you catch a sighting of her?

Team Kenny

Debi Giannola, Cathi Hatch & Patty Barrier give Kenny a leg up
This morning, Patty Barrier, Debi Giannola and I joined over 100 friends of Ken Kirkpatrick to be part of "Team Kenny" for the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk at the Seattle Center.  It was a beautiful, sunny morning and we were all so happy to be there for Ken.

To find "Team Kenny", we looked for the 100 blue balloons, which were visible all the way across the Seattle Center Courtyard area as we walked in from the parking lot.  There were many friends, neighbors, and employees of US Bank there wearing goat bells and carrying blue balloons.  SaSa and Tina Kirkpatrick were there helping to organize all the participants.

Some of the friends and supporters we had a chance to connect with there were JJ McKay, Eric Akines, Mike Doherty, Kristie Mock, Carol & Buster Brown, Gaylee & Jim Duncan, Glenna Olsonand Kathy & Jim Tune.  There were bands playing, cheerleaders cheering on the walkers and entertainers all along the walk route to keep the morning high energy and lighthearted.  We were all so happy to see Kenny and to walk with him to raise money for brain cancer research.

Pacific Northwest Ballet First Look Evolution

PNB Principal Dancer Carrie Imler with Ken
Last evening, Ken and I attended the black-tie opening night celebration of Pacific Northwest Ballet; First Look Evolution 2011 at McCaw Hall.  The evening began with a cocktail reception and dinner backstage prior to the ballet performance.  The menu was great and in addtion to the entree of beef tenderloin with roasted potatos and summer squash corn ratatouille included my favorite which was a delicious peach and endive salad with Serrano Ham, arugula and Banyuls vinaigrette.

Sarah & John Rindlaub with Carrie Imler
We were seated with PNB Principal Ballet Dancer, Carrie Imler, who was not dancing until the next evening.  Also seated at our table were Sarah & John Rindlaub and Gaylee & Jim Duncan.  The event was filled with friends and other PNB ballet aficianados including Dan & Michele Heidt, Peter Horvitz, Aya Hamilton, Lynn & Frank Lindsay, Leena & Mel Sturman, Norma Cugini, Gail James, Rian & Peter McLeod, Caroline Goedhart, Betty Tong, Margaret Dell'Osso, Jane & David Davis, Sandra Dunn, Sharon Richardson, Bob Cremin, Carole Ellison, Jeanne Tweten & Jim Leslie and dozens of others.  (Ken doesn't actually admit to being a ballet aficianado, but I am still working on him!)

Following dinner, PNB Artistic Director, Peter Boal, announced and introduced several dancers new to PNB this season and on stage announced the promotions of both Lesley Rausch and Rachel Foster as Principal Dancers  Each was presented with a big bouquet of flowers onstage to thunderous applause.

Carrie Imler
The performance was incredible.  It was ALL WHEELDON, a program with all works choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and included Carousel (A Dance), Polyphonia, Variations Serieuses and After the Rain pas de deux.  My personal favorites were Carousel and the After the Rain pas de deux.  Carousel was exquiste with Principal Dancers, Carla Körbes and Seth Orza dancing the lead roles and After the Rain was breathtakingly beautiful danced by Principal Dancers, Maria Chapman and Karel Cruz.  At the performance I sat next to PNB Soloist Dancer, James Moore, who was cast to dance the After the Rain pas de deux on the next night with newly announced PNB Principal Dancer, Rachel Foster.  I didn't hear him even breathe during the entire performance by Maria and Karel.

After the performance, the evening ended with an onstage dance party, where the party patrons and professional ballet dancers had a wonderful time dancing together into the wee hours.

Gooooo Huskies!

Cathi & Patty celebrate!
Today the Huskies got the win over the California Golden Bears with a final score of 31-23.  Patty & Jimmy Barrier and Ken and I went to the game together and had a great time eating hot dogs and popcorn and watching the Huskies play a great game!

The defense was really fantastic, but the offense was no slouch either.  Patty and I both got a little distracted watching the acrobatic cheerleaders do gymnastic people towers, but loved waving our big "W" flags in support of the team.

SIFP Quarter Finals Impressive

Kristie Lanum & Kate DesRosier
Today the Social Venture Partners Social Innovation Fast Pitch (SIFP) Quarter Finals Round was held in Paccar Hall at the University of Washington.  Around 37 social entrepreneurs were on hand to make 5 minute pitches to a panel of judges in the hopes that they will be passed through to the Semi Finals Round.

Will Poole, Chairman of the overall SIFP event and self-described "Chief Digital Media Innovation Officer" facilitated and led the day beginning with his own 5 minute pitch to ask for support to fill the room for the main event which will be on October 3rd at Fisher Pavilion.

Will and the Judges deliberate between presentations
ZINO Society is "powering" the event with our staff providing the staff support for this event. Will has definitely challenged us with his aversion to paper and the many new innovation digital tools he has introduced to us.  We are actually looking forward to continuing to use many of the tools he has shared.  Doodle polls are now a staple at ZINO Society!  Thank you, Will!

ZINO Society Dealflow Managers, Kristie Lanum and Kate DesRosier oversaw all the entrepreneur Powerpoint presentations on their computers, managing the audio and visual elements of the day.  ZINO Society interns Stephanie Halamek and Alex Fraser managed the timing and microphones, while Christine Gilbert managed the registration and food and beverages.

The entrepreneurs, who were all mentored and coached, did a fantastic job of sharing their company pitches in a timely, compelling and convincing manner. Congratulations to all of the entrepreneurs who made it to the Quarter Finals Round.  Everyone is on eggshells until tomorrow when we will hear who was selected for the SIFP Semi Finals.

The Music was Magic

On Saturday night I attended the Opening Gala for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra featuring new Artistic Director and Music Maestro, Ludovic Morlot.  The music was magical and I especially enjoyed the performance of Ravel's Bolero, during which Ludo left his raised podium as conductor and joined the violin section so he could play with the orchestra.

It appeared to be a sell out concert and it was fun to see so many people attending whom I have worked with over the years when I was on the active Seattle Symphony Board of Directors.  I am now a Lifetime Director which is a nice recognition for past efforts.

Following the concert, dinner was served in the Stroum Grand Lobby and included an Amuse of a fresh arugula salad with end of summer tomatoes, baby beets and caramelized California figs and an Entree of Pacific wild halibut with cider braised savoy cabbage with celery root-apple puree and baby carrots.  The best part was the cream puffs for dessert served with mini pitchers of caramel sauce!

Chairman of the SSO Board, Leslie Chihuly, put together a table of her girl friends to attend in support of the Seattle Symphony.  Just as the concert ended, music aficianado, Bob Cremin, who had just blown into town from Vienna and bought a concert ticket at the last possible moment decided that he was willing to stay for the party and join the all-girls table.  SSO Staff "magician", Jennifer Lee, was able to pull the necessary strings to get him added to an already full table, which he enjoyed thoroughly.  Included at our table were Patty Barrier, Patti Payne, Pat Wallace, Alexis Phelps, Elisabeth Roberts, Betty Tong, Nicole Vogel, Ginny Ruffner and Ann Redmond.

Congratulations to Leslie, Ludo, Executive Director Simon Woods and the entire Seattle Symphony family on the exciting start to a new season!

20 Years and Still Rockin'

Denny Miller with Sue & Jim Bianco
Last night, I attended the 20th Anniversary Celebration of CTI (Cell Therapeutics, Inc.) at the Paramount Theatre.  Friends, staff and associates of CTI donned their best rock and roll attire and came to get their party on with great cocktails, dinner and dancing.

CTI CEO Jim Bianco and his wife Sue, greeted all the arriving guests during the cocktail party while the guests were entertained with an Elvis impersonator who crooned to the crowd with a fantastic voice.  At the ice bar was a special blue drink that was delivered via an impressive ice luge so arrived in the martini glass totally icy cold.  It was absolutely delicious!  The bartender said it contained volka, blue curacao and grapefruit juice.

Sue Bianco, Cathi Hatch, Heather Sandoval
A few of the guests included Denny Miller, well-known lobbyist who flew in from Washington D.C. for the party as well as Michael Kunath, Heather & Michael Sandoval, JJ McKay, Pam & Peter Schmitt, Jeff Roe, Celestia Higano & Jack Singer, Christina Orr-Cahall, Lou Bianco, John Bauer & Maryel Duzan, Kate Harrison, Connie Blumenthal, Matt Walters, Jerry & Sherry Henke, Bernt & Elizabeth Bodal, and Phil & Sandy Nudelman.

It was a collaboration of two great chefs, Chef in the Hat, Thierry Rautureau and Tom Douglas.  Each prepared part of the dinner.  Thierry presented the appetizer which was a smoked duck salad with balsamic jam and roasted apple while Tom presented the entree with included an Oregon Bavette Rib Steak with vegetable succotash along with tarragon and fennel and yukon gold potatoes.  The dessert was Tom's fantastic Triple Coconut Cream Pie.  Yum!

Michael Sandoval, Ken Hatch, NIcholas Danieledes
Even Ken (the well-known party curmudgeon) raved about what a great party it was and how much he liked the music!  The Gregg Rolie Band really had the whole place shaking.  He was the original lead singer for Santana and a Founding member of the group and is now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Other favorite moments of the evening included  when the stage and lighting was "revealed" for the band, how the old world elegance of the Paramount Theatre was juxtaposed with bright orange tablecloths and modern chairs and lighting, and the very real appearing video performance by a Michelle Obama impersonator.

Each guest departed with a beautifully custom-etched, CTI-branded bottle of Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain 2008 red wine to toast CTI's future.
Jeff Roe, Pam & Peter Schmitt

Ken & Cathi Hatch with JJ McKay
We all look forward to celebrating the next 20 years of CTI's continued success in making cancer more treatable and saving lives!

Celebrating Ron's 70th

Grandchildren Logan and Hutton with Birthday Boy Ron
Last night Ken and I joined Bonnie & Ron Elgin at their home for Ron's 70th Birthday Party Dinner.  Their daughter, Alison and husband, Brett Leger were there along with their children, Logan and Hutton.

Logan gave an eloquent toast to her grandfather as did Brett, Ken and several others.  We did have to call Ken off with hisses and catcalls when he started to get into his lengthy, "values speech".

Ken and Ron
Good friends, Ted Baseler and wife, Joanne, were on hand to talk about the wines being poured for the seven-course dinner that the Executive Chef of Holland America Cruise Line who oversaw the special celebration dinner said was in honor of Ron's seven "centuries".  Some of the other celebrants included Theresa Dowell & Greg Jones, Dave & Judy Palmer, Marisa & Brad Walker, Sandy & Glenn Wright, and Dave & Trudi Syferd plus staff and passengers from Holland America Cruise Line including CEO Stein Kruse and his wife, Linda.

The menu included:
Creamy Alaskan Crab Bisque with Bourbon
Crisp Green Salad with Goose Liver and Lobster, Avocado, Fresh Berries and a drizzle of Calvados Dressing
Asian Style Steamed Diver Scallop with Black Bean Sauce, Ginger and Cilantro
Lemon Sorbet topped with Champagne
Veal Chop with Fresh Chanterelles and Huckleberry Reducton Accompanied by Grilled Polenta
Artisan Washinton Cheeses with Honeycomb and Dried Fruit
Marzipan Frosted Birthday Cake

One of the guests painted a portrait of Ron which was admired by all attending and Ron was thrilled with it.  Happy Birthday, Ron!  We all love you!

Gala Schmala -- SIFP is Different

ZINO Society is partnering with Social Venture Partners to produce the inaugural Social Innovation Fast Pitch (SIFP) forum coming up on October 3rd at Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center.  We are expecting passionate supporters of social innovation and entrepreneurism creativity to join us for what will be an intellectually stimulating (and fun) event beginning at 4:30 pm that afternoon.  I hope you will join us.

Below I repost for you a blog written by fellow SIFP Core Team member, Vikram Chalana, which will give you all the information you will need to know.  It will be an amazing evening!

Submitted by vchalana on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 12:30

Many nonprofit organizations host a big gala with a keynote speaker to help raise money and awareness for their mission.

SIFP is not that. Here are the top 10 ways SIFP is different:

1. Instead of a 60 minute keynote, SIFP features 5 minute pitches by 14 passionate and committed social entrepreneurs.

2. Instead of hearing about the same-old, same-old, you hear about new and innovative world changing ideas.

3. Instead of asking you for money, we ask you to vote by text message for your favorite pitches so they can get money that we've already raised.

4. Instead of hearing only about one non-profit, you will hear from multiple non-profits, from for-profit social businesses, and from social enterprises driven by high school and college students.

5. Instead of supporting and getting involved in one-cause, at SIFP you can choose the social innovation that you want to support in the future and get involved with.

6. Instead of trying to eat a meal at a round-table while trying hard to hear the keynote over the clinks of the forks, SIFP features the pitches in a theater-style seating followed by a wine and appetizer social hour.

7. Instead of interacting with only the 10 people at your table, at SIFP you get to interact with anyone and everyone, including the social innovators making the fast pitches.

8. Instead of a weekend night, SIFP is being held on a Monday evening starting at 4:30pm.

9. Instead of awkward ballroom dancing after dinner, at SIFP you get to interact with other like-minded people and the social entrepreneurs over a glass of wine.

10. Instead of a tuxedo or an evening gown, Jeans, T-shirts, and Birkestocks with socks are considered appropriate attire at SIFP.

Welcome to the World Boden Warren Laramore!

Baby Boden with Proud Parents, Katie & Kevin
Yesterday, my beautiful daughter, Katie Laramore, gave birth to her second son, Boden Warren Laramore.  He arrived weighing in at 8 pounds and 2 ounces and was 18-1/2 inches long with a fuzz of blonde hair.  Along with Katie, and her husband Kevin, and their 2 year old son, Cutter, we all welcomed him to his new world.  He is gorgeous and perfect in every way!

Katie's brother and sister-in-law, Jeff & Renee Lindstrom, brought their two daughters, Sonja and Bea to see their new cousin and made dinner to share last night . . . a great paella followed by yummy fresh strawberry and rhubarb crisp.

At her request, I have promised Katie that I will make a Coconut Cream Pie (her favorite) in celebration of Boden's birth and Ken is looking for just the perfect bottle of wine from his cellar when we celebrate with them again this weekend.

This ZINO team is Kick A__!

ZINO Team Christine Gilbert, Mary Holmes, Cathi Hatch,
Kristie Lanum, Jamee Nunnelee
This coming Tuesday is our biggest ZINO Society event of the year, ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum.  The ZINO Society team has been working VERY hard to get all the details ready so that everyone attending has a wonderful time!

Kristie Lanum, our Chief Dealflow Officer, has managed the overall task list for ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum for our entire team and has worked specifically with all of our presenting entrepreneurs, most of which are now new ZINOpreneur Members for the upcoming year.  Kristie has overseen the screening and coaching processes and worked with our incredible list of coaches to ensure that each entrepreneur presenting on Tuesday will be the best that they can be in sharing a concise and compelling pitch.  This is akin to herding cats since there are so many people involved, but Kristie has done it with her usual aplomb and grace.

Mary Holmes, our Chief Marketing Officer, has recruited and communicated with over eighteen (18) panelists who will participate in three separate expert panels providing input and advice to entrepreneurs and investors.  Each panel should be fascinating including a Hospitality, Food, & Travel Panel, a VC & Angel Panel to provide input to our Back-of-the-Napkin presenting companies and a Due Diligence LIVE! Panel to ask questions of the six (6) fund finalists who will be selected by the ZINO Angel fund investors.  Mary has also worked to attract sponsors, develop new branding elements for ZZIF, overseen the press relationships and worked directly with our Co-Presentor, Puget Sound Business Journal, to produce a two-page ad coming out in today's issue.

Jamee Nunnelee, our VP of Membership, has communicated with ZINO Society members to get them the information they need to attend ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum and invited many of our friends and membership prospects to join us as well.  She is offering a rebate on ZINO Society membership for those new members that join by the end of September.  Jamee has also worked to attract specific ZZIF sponsors and arranged for some of our Wine Professional Members to pour their wines at the Networking Reception at the end of the day.

Christine Gilbert, our Events Director, has worked tirelessly to design and produce our blast emails to notify everyone of the details of ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum, design and produce the agenda and event program, taken reservations, answered endless questions, produced name tags, and panelist tent cards, arranged for prizes for fund finalists and ZINO Zenith Award winners, worked with MOHAI to arrange all the event details and the caterer to provide sustenance so we can all make it through the entire day with appropriate food, beverages and snacks to keep up our energy.

Please come see what we do!  I think you will be impressed with the quality of the entrepreneur pitches, the panelists, the food and wine, and all the details that make this a first-class event!  And then please do tell me what you think.

Raising a Glass of Wine at Virtual Vino LIVE!

Cathi Hatch, JJ McKay, Patty Barrier
Last week, I invited good friends, Patty Barrier and JJ McKay to join me at my home to taste wine with me on behalf of the new business I am co-founding with Blaine Millet, Virtual Vino LIVE!  This is an online blind wine tasting show featuring Washington wines and supporting local charities.  Because of my involvement with Wine Professional Members at ZINO Society and my background of serving on charitable boards, I know lots of winemakers and charities that we can invite to participate.

Patty and JJ and I served as panelists tasting wines and giving our non-sommelier opinions, while radio host and show facilitator, Brian Calvert, tried to herd us into a semblance of structure.  Brian was very good, but we kept finding topics that would take the conversation just a tiny bit (well maybe more than a tiny bit) off track.  Meanwhile, Blaine captured the fun on camera. ZiZi, our little Yorkshire terrier again took a lead role in providing a colorful sound track.

JJ McKay, Cathi Hatch, Patty Barrier, Brian Calvert
during VirtualVinoLIVE show.
This is still a new venture and I know we will get more polished at this as we go forward, but in the meantime, it is alot of fun!  You can see our Red Blend Wine Tasting Show by clicking HERE.  On that particular show, the favorite wine of the three panelists was the Dunham Cellars, Trutina 2007, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.  We also tasted some great wines by J. Bookwalter Winery, Goose Ridge and Brian Carter Cellars.

The charities that we featured in this show included ARCS, Hopelink and the 50th Anniversary of the Seattle Center

Can't wait until our next show together.  I think we will taste white blends . . .

Last Days of Summer . . .

Jackson Hatch, Jackson Schultz, Spencer Hatch
Upon our return from Black Rock today, we saw Katie and Kevin who are still awaiting the imminent birth of their second son.  It turned out to be a false alarm, but we hope to hear later tonight or tomorrow that the time is here!
Baby Andrew & Michael Hatch

Ken with baby Andrew and Alicia
In the afternoon, we also had the opportunity to catch up with Michael & Alicia and their three sons, Jackson, Spencer and Andrew at Overlake Golf Club.  Baby Andrew is as cute as a baby bug and Jackson showed off his new-found diving prowess off the diving board in the deep end of the big swimming pool, while Spencer played in the wading pool.  School starts the day after tomorrow so it was fun to share a few minutes of those last days of summer.

Wildlife and Golf at Black Rock

Firoz, Najma, Jimmy, Patty, Cathi, Sarah, John, Ken
This weekend, Ken and I travelled to Black Rock, Idaho as guests of John & Sarah Rindlaub aboard our favorite airline, "Barrier Air" owned by friends Patty & Jimmy Barrier.  We had planned a golf get-away at spectacular The Golf Club at Black Rock over Labor Day weekend and were so pleased to be able to spend a few days with our friends, the Rindlaubs, Barriers and Najma & Firoz LaljiThe Golf Club at Black Rock was recently named in Forbes Magazine as one of the 12 best golf communities in the United States.

Wild Turkeys on course

Deer on course
Patty, Cathi, Caddy Kelly, Sarah, Najma
As always, the golf course was brutally challenging and fantastically beautiful overlooking Lake Coeur d"Alene. I played one of my best nine holes ever on the front nine (45 which is very good compared to my regular golf game).  However, once again this year, on the signature #11 hole, I could not pitch my ball up between the rocks and over the waterfall and lake onto the green, though Patty was successful in doing so once again!  There were flocks of wild turkeys and deer throughout the course which made the game even more memorable.

Najma & Firoz
Dance to the music!

On Saturday night, we had dinner in the Lodge and had the opportunity to hear the love story of Firoz and NajmaFiroz actually told two versions, one that made it appear that beautiful Najma chased him down and then the true story, where he met Najma just two days before he was getting ready to move to Canada from Uganda.  Firoz actually travelled back and forth from Uganda to Canada, and back again within one week, just so he could see her again.  There were married within the year and have been married for 46 years.  Nice!  There was a lively band playing in the cocktail lounge and as we were leaving after dinner, Patty and I joined the dancing and John also could not leave without taking a turn on the dance floor and on top of a table too of course!

Speaking of anniversarys, on our way home we celebrated Patty & Jimmy's 25th wedding anniversary with chocolate-dipped strawberries courtesy of the Barrier pilots.  Happy Anniversary Patty & Jimmy!
