Cool Yule, Cool Jazz, and a Baby Reindeer Too!

Patty Barrier and Cathi Hatch at Cool Yule
On Thursday, ZINO Society's annual Cool Yule Holiday Party was a memorable evening.  The theme this year was:  Unleash Your Inner Vixen (and Blitzen)!  First, we were in the "coolest" of showrooms at the new Barrier Mercedes of Bellevue.  Shiny red and black Mercedes automobiles were the backdrop for an evening of fun and frivolity.  Thank you to our dear friends and annual sponsors at Barrier Motors, Patty & Jimmy Barrier, Michael Vena, Kjell Schei and Lisa Hess!

Baby Rogue the Reindeer with Elf Handlers
Glasses were clinking, saxophones swaying and bold brush strokes of an artist at work were some of the sounds of this year's Cool Yule Holiday Party.  We welcomed Jazz Canvas as part of the evening's entertainment which blended live jazz musicians with live unrehearsed art in motion. The artist literally painted to the feeling of the music on a huge canvas that was raffled off at the end of the party.  Pike Brewing Company, O Wines, DeLille Cellars, Dineen Vineyards, Martinez & Martinez, Woodhouse Wine Estates and Sozo Planet while Ray's Boathouse & Catering provided the hors d'oeuvres.

We toasted one another and another successful year of angel investing, entrepreneurism and connecting having just surpassed $19 million in angel investing amongst our ZINO Society Seattle investor group.  For sipping and toasting, featured winemakers and beverages included
Cathi Hatch with Monte Regier of Sozo Friends.

Rogue (aka Blitzen), the baby reindeer was on hand with his two "elf" handlers for photo ops and was a real hit with everyone (except perhaps Pepper Payne, the Papipoo who was attending with mom Patti Payne, whom I am sure thought Rogue was just another big puppy).

Mary Holmes oversaw the entire event and made it a family affair convincing her husband, Jerry to pour wine and daughter Jacqueline who was there with friends to sell raffle tickets and hang up coats.

Mary & Jerry Holmes
Christine Gilbert, our resident songster, along with assistance from creative mind, Jamee Nunnelee, developed the ZINO Society version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" now known as "The Twelve Days of ZINO" with apologies to English composer, Frederic Austin, which was performed with enthusiasm by the following ZINO Society cast of members including staff team, coaches, sponsors, investors, entrepreneurs and winemakers. We all donned reindeer antlers and gave it our best.  The vocal standout was definitely Christine, who had the "five wine rings" part and sounded like an opera singer.  Here are the lyrics:

On the First Day of Christmas, my ZINO gave to me: (All)
A year full of Opportunity!  (All)
Cathi Hatch and Gregg Bennett

On the Third Day of Christmas, my ZINO gave to me:
Three Nametag Ribbons (Cathi Hatch)
Two Mercedes Benz (Mary Holmes)
And a Year full of Opportunity

On the Sixth Day of Christmas, my ZINO gave to me:
Six Friends Connecting (Patty Barrier)
Fiiiiive Wiiii-iiine Riiiings (Christine Gilbert)
Four Passport Cards (Jamee Nunnelee)
Three Nametag Ribbons (Cathi Hatch)
Two Mercedes Benz (Mary Holmes)
And a Year full of Opportunity! (All)

On the Tenth Day of Christmas, my ZINO gave to me:  (All)
Ten Wineries Pouring (Andrew Martinez)
Nine Elevator Pitches (John Faccone)
Eight Investors Investing (Gregg Bennett)
Seven Funds a-funding (Kate DesRosier)
Six Friends Connecting (Patty Barrier)
Fiiiiive Wiiii-iiine Riiiings (Christine Gilbert)
Four Passport Cards (Jamee Nunnelee)
Three Nametag Ribbons (Cathi Hatch)
Two Mercedes Benz (Mary Holmes)
And a Year full of Opportunity! (All)

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, my ZINO gave to me: (All)
Twelve Coaches Coaching (Chuck Roxin)
Eleven Angel Investors (Brian Vowinkel)
Ten Wineries Pouring (Andrew Martinez)
Nine Elevator Pitches (John Faccone)
Eight Investors Investing (Gregg Bennett)
Seven Funds a-funding (Kate DesRosier)

Fiiiiive Wiii-iiiine Riiiiings (Christine Gilbert)
Four Passport Cards (Jamee Nunnelee)

We all got our "Blitzen" on and a great time was had by all!

Impressive Gathering of Angels and VCs

Atlas to ZINO Investor Open House
On Tuesday evening, Atlas Accelerator and ZINO Society co-hosted the Atlas to ZINO Investor Open House,  inviting 23 funded and companies seeking funding to present to 100 Angel Investors and VCs.  Though ZINO Society merely assisted Atlas Accelerator in producing their event, of the 23 Atlas Accelerator clients presenting, it was interesting to note that 15 had also previously been through the ZINO Society screening and coaching processes presented to ZINO Society Angel Investor Roundtable members at monthly investment meetings and/or investment forums and 5 had received some funding through ZINO Society.

Bill Furlong of Escapia opened the evening speaking about the inherent optimism of entrepreneurs and investors while Bill McAleer of Voyager Capital was the final speaker providing data on the "lost decade" and the return to normalcy or ROI for investors.

MIT Forum - Meet the Angels!

Villette Nolon, Cathi Hatch, Greg Huey
Last night I was one of the panelists representing ZINO Society as one of the seven local angel groups showcased at MIT Enterprise Forum Northwest also including Greg Huey of Alliance of Angels, Nathan McDonald of Keiretsu Forum, Byron McCann of NW Energy Angels, Stephen Handley of Puget Sound Venture Club, Villette Nolon of Seraph Capital Forum and Tom Kadavy of WINGS.  Rebecca Lovell, Executive Director of NWEN, did a masterful job of moderating the panel

Though there were a few entrepreneurs from other business genres, the room was filled primarily with technology entrepreneurs since the MIT Enterprise Forum is dedicated to the advancement of technology commercialization.  The entrepreneurs had a chance to hear a bit about each of the angel groups and about their primary focus(es).  Of the many specific questions posed by the attendees, the primary answer each time was, "It depends.", since each company is so individual.  It is impossible to follow a "rule of thumb" for establishing valuation, though some very good advice was given to avoid going over that $1 million valuation number for brand-new startups.

Rebecca Lovell at podium, Byron McCann, Steve Handley,
Nathan McDonald, Tom Kadavy, Villette Nolon,
Cathi Hatch and Greg Huey
There were questions about what percentage of a company should be the equity opportunity for angels and the response following, "It depends" was that angels are generally looking to own around 30-33% of a company with their funding.  Other important advice given to entrepreneurs was how important it is to communicate with their investors once they do receive funding; both the good and the bad things that always occur in starting up a business.  Byron encouraged the entrepreneurs to believe in themselves and not see themselves as "delusional" as they are passionately pursuing their dream and Steve advised that they be relentless in honing their story and continue to communicate it to their stockholders, their employees, potential investors, potential customers and the world at large.

My advice to entrepreneurs was to use the expert coaching that ZINO Society provides as part of our ZINOpreneur membership benefits and assume that they will need to pitch at multiple angel groups before they receive all the funding that they need to make their company successful.  It is in the best interest of the angel investors and the entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs to get that funding   I believe that collaboration and sharing of information and dealflow between the angel groups is of great value because together we can all make the entrepreneur and angel investing landscape a vibrant one for the future health of new businesses in our region while helping entrepreneurs achieve their dreams and providing the best possible investment opportunity dealflow to investors in our community.

My Favorite Things from ZZIF

Today I just received the YouTube of Jon Doll's performance of his original song and lyrics, "On The Shoulders of Angel Investors" that we kicked off the ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum last week.  I may be biased, but I think it is fantastic and the lyrics are so appropriate for investors and entrepreneurs.  You can view it HERE.

Three of my other favorite things from ZZIF were our panels.  I thought that each panel was extremely interesting and that the audience was really enjoying their questions and input.

David Mackuen's Five-Minute presentation of BuiltBurger right before lunch.  It was a great presentation and he won the ZINO Zenith Award for Best Presenter.  But it also started stomachs growling and made everyone realize how famished we all were.

The ZINOpreneurs' presentations are always one of my favorite things and I love the Five-Minute pitches!  But this time, I was also hugely impressed with how much information the Two-Minute presenters were able to share in such a limited time.

The support of our ZINO Society sponsors is incredibly important, because we would not be able to produce ZZIF without their support.  What a great group of people!

Another BIG thank you to everyone who helped make ZZIF so successful this year.

And the ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum Winners are . . .

After a full day of watching and interacting with presenting entrepreneurs and demo table entrepreneurs at ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum on Wednesday, we adjourned downstairs to the Bell Harbor Conference Center International Promenade for the "Spiels and Suds" segment of the ZZIF agenda featuring entrepreneur demo tables and beer from Pike Brewing Company and K & L Distributors followed by the Awards and Wine Reception featuring eight wineries.  Featured wineries included Woodward Canyon Winery, DeLille Cellars, Lachini Vineyards, Sparkman Cellars, San Juan Vineyards, 428 Wines, Cave B Winery and Pepper Bridge Winery.
Coaches Dave Watt, Skip Walter, Vin Ricci

At the Awards and Wine Reception, the first awards presented were to the ZZIF Coaches who worked with the entrepreneurs to ensure that their presentations would be concise and compelling.  Executive Vice President, Kristie Lanum, and I presented Coaches' Awards for "Winningest Coach" to Vin Ricci, "Special Teams Coach" to Dave Watts and Jackson Weaver (tie) and "Rookie of the Year Coach" to Skip Walter.

Craig Rominger, NanoICE for Best Investment
David Makuen for Best Presenter
The next awards presented were the ZINO Zenith Awards which were voted on by all the ZZIF attendees for Best Presentation to David Makuen of BuiltBurger and Best Investment Opportunity to Craig Rominger of NanoICE, Inc.

ZZIF Fund Finalists Kevin Veon, Adam Stein, Keith McCall,
Ken Childress, Max Lyon, Craign Rominger
And the final ZZIF awards presented were the ZINO Zillionaire Fund Finalists Awards selected by the fund investors to Kevin Veon of Banshee Bungee, Max Lyon of FiatLux Imaging, Adam Stein of IMOS, Keith McCall of Enroute Systems, Ken Childress of Harbor Wing Technologies, and Craig Rominger of NanoIce, Inc.  The fund investors will now complete due diligence within the next month on the finalist companies with the goal of awarding the $100,000 fund split between the two best investment opportunities they select.

Strategies for Courting Angel Investors

On Tuesday this week, ZINO Society presented our second Get Funded! Winning Strategies for Courting Angel Investors event for entrepreneurs who are interested in seeking angel funding for start-up or expansion capital.  A fascinating group of entrepreneurs attended representing their companies from various business sectors.  The companies ranged from Software as a Service, marketing, a three wheel motorcycle company, consumer products and services, a winery, a medical device company as well as a number of others.  See photos of the group above.
We were hosted by ZINO Society long-term sponsor and friend, Davis Wright Tremaine, in its spectacular 22nd floor office.  Attending on behalf of DWT were Haeryung Shin and Kate White.  Haeryung’s input and advice during the workshop from an attorney’s perspective, was very helpful.  ZINOPartner and Founder of Business Plans Northwest, Bryan Brewer, led the interactive training session which included advice on how to present more effectively in front of angel investors as well as what information is most important to include in a presentation seeking funding.  He listed the seven deadly sins to avoid when making a pitch to angel investors as obfuscation, verbosity, inaccuracy, laziness, arrogance, impatience, and delusion.  More detail about each of these deadly sins is on Bryan’s website.
What is your pet peeve when it comes to listening to an entrepreneur present his or her funding pitch?

Banshee Bungee stretched our minds!

One of the entrepreneurs who presented at the ZINO Society Roundtable Investment meeting this week was Kevin Veon, CEO of Banshee Bungee.  Banshee Bungee has developed a braided bungee that is used for horizontal sports to launch skateboarders, snowboarders and surfers at a 30 mile per hour speed.  See photo of Kevin and me above holding the Banshee Bungee.  The Roundtable members and guests were fascinated with his presentation and enthralled with the video he shared which you can see on their website.  Would you try this?

Our Inaugural "Get Funded!" Workshop

Yesterday afternoon, ZINO Society hosted our inaugural “Get Funded!:  Winning Strategies for Courting Angel Investors” workshop in the stunning offices of our event and annual sponsor, Davis Wright Tremaine.  The four hour workshop followed by a wine and hors d’oeuvres networking reception was conducted by ZINO Society Coaching Member and principal of Business Plans Northwest, Bryan Brewer, and ZINO Society COO, Rob Brown.
The workshop included “in the trenches” information on the angel funding process, courting angel investors, the investor pitch and angels in the Northwest.  The participants were a mix of entrepreneurs and a few angel investors who shared their passion, knowledge and challenges with one another.  The participant evaluations were very positive with requests for additional topics to be covered in the future.  When asked, which aspect of the session was most helpful, every participant had a different answer which speaks to the diversity of the entrepreneurial stages that each represented.  We did agree, however, that we would share everyone’s contact information so the dialog could be continued amongst the attendees.
I know that I look forward to working with Bryan and Rob to continue to further develop and tweak the curriculum for future sessions!

FundingPost Venture Funding Panel

Yesterday I participated as a panelist in an Early-Stage VC and Angel Investor event organized by FundingPost.com.  The event was sponsored by Perkins Coie and the panel was ably facilitated by Partner, Ben Straughan (see 3rd photo from top with Ben standing far left).  Also serving on the panel pictured above(see top photo above from l-to-r) was Saqib Rasool, CEO and Angel Investor of Conceivian; Petra Franklin, Managing Director of Vault Capital; me, Lucinda Stewart, Managing Director of OVP Venture Partners; Bill Bryant, Venture Partner at Draper Fisher Jurvetson; Bill McAleer, Managing Director of Voyager Capital, and Janis Machala, Angel Investor of Paladin Partners.
The event began with at least 15 or more entrepreneurs each sharing a two minute elevator pitch.  The entrepreneurs varied widely from those with just the seed of an idea to those with companies that are already producing revenue.  The most memorable was a young man who presented first, wearing a shiny white satin suit and who boomed out his elevator pitch at top volume.  Many of the presenting entrepreneurs had just completed a pitching workshop earlier that day and for some, this was their first public pitch.  There were a few entrepreneurs who have previously pitched at ZINO Society; Michael Williams of Reality Gap (also winner of 2008 ZINO Zillionaire Investment Forum best presenter award), Burt Hamner of Hydrovolts (also winner of ZINO Green 2009 Best Investment Opportunity and current fund finalist in ZINO Green 2010 Best Investment Opportunity), and Greg Lambrecht of Text-a-Day.
The future funding outlook as presented by the panel was relatively positive with the exception of self-described contrarian, Bill Bryant.  See second photo above with Bill 3rd from left smiling and looking not like a contrarian at all!  Panelists answered questions about what investors look for in a pitch.  Here are my top ten:
1.       A one sentence description right up front in laymen’s terms explaining what problem the business solves.
2.       A reasonable valuation.
3.       How is the product or service is better than what others are doing?
4.       Is there already proof of concept and actual revenue?
5.       What is the addressable market and who are most likely competitors?
6.       What market channels have been identified and how will they be accessed?
7.       How will the funds being raised be used?
8.       What is the entrepreneur’s past experience and expertise and that of his/her team?
9.       What is the envisioned exit strategy and who are likely acquirers?
10.   What rights, deal sweeteners, preferences, etc. does the investor get for participating?
We each were then asked to share an important piece of advice on what to do or not do to be most effective in raising money from investors.  My advice was to take the time to listen to potential investors and hear out their feedback and advice.  The biggest turnoff is an entrepreneur who comes across as arrogant or a know-it-all and who refuses to listen.

ZINO Life Seattle a Success!

Yesterday at the beautiful Pan Pacific Hotel, ZINO Society was the proud presenter of ZINO Life:  Life Sciences Investment Forum along with our partner, WBBA.  We were very pleased to have around 120 members and guests in attendance to hear 15 entrepreneurs present their companies’ needs divided into three dealflow flights:  Seed Stage, Launch Stage and Expansion Stage.  (See alphabetical list and links of the 15 presenting companies below at the bottom of this blog post.)  Each of the entrepreneurs was carefully screened and then coached to be successful in presenting their pitches succinctly and clearly in 7 minutes each with 2 minutes following for questions and answers.  Though we are usually quite time sensitive and strive to stay on the agenda schedule at all of our events, we were thoroughly impressed with the results and that we were able to stay completely on schedule for the entire afternoon with Events and Marketing Manager, McKenzie Powell’s chimes warnings and agenda timing tools.  Or maybe it was the delicious chocolate treats that brought people back to their seats so effectively that sponsor, Stoel Rives, shared as part of the coffee break they sponsored.
In addition to the entrepreneur presentations, we had the opportunity to hear insights and experiences from keynote speaker Patrick Jensen of SpaceLabs during the “Fireside Chat” portion of the afternoon (see top photo above).  However, in the spirit of full disclosure, there was NOT a fireplace in sight!  Following the keynote, the expert panel discussed some of the opportunities and the challenges facing life science companies and included David Schubert, President of Accelerator Corporation; Marty Simonetti, President of VLST Corporation; Chris Rivera, President of WBBA; Michelle Burris, COO of Trubion; facilitated by ZINO Life major sponsor Alan Smith, Partner at Fenwick & West, (see 2nd photo above).  Alan did his usual great job of extracting and managing the plethora of information that our expert panelists were ready to share.
Patrick Jensen then joined the expert panel to participate in the Due Diligence LIVE! process to question the three entrepreneur finalists  (see 3rd photo above) selected by the ZINO Life 2010 Investment Fund investors.  The three finalists gracefully surviving their due diligence grilling were Kevin Connolly of SRS Medical, Carole Spangler of Seattle Sensor Systems and Paul Slowey (aka “Dr. Spit”) of Oasis Diagnostics Corporation, who was also last year’s winner of the ZINO Life 2009 Investment Fund.
The ZINO Zenith Award winners were selected by all the attendees at the event via written ballot.  Winning the award for Best Presenter was Richard Lazar of DeltaPoint and for Best Investment Opportunity was Carole Spangler of Seattle Sensor Systems (see 4th photo above).
The event concluded with fantastic passed hors d’oeuvres provided by our venue sponsor, Pan Pacific Hotel, and wine and beer courtesy of our ZINO Society Wine/Beer Professional Members, Don Wood of Icicle Ridge Winery, Joseph & John Miglino of Martedi Winery, and Charles & Rose Ann Finkel of Pike Brewing Company (see 5th, 6th and 7th photos above).  Along with the excellent beer and wine selections, conversations flowed!
Next stop is ZINO Life Portland on April 29th with a new set of sponsors, expert panelists and keynote speaker, but the same screened and coached presenting entrepreneurs.  Click here for registration info.

The Screening and Coaching Process for Entrepreneurs

This past week, we welcomed our new intern, Kayla Villnow to ZINO Society.  Kayla is a second year MBA candidate at the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, with a concentration on corporate strategy.  She is already making herself invaluable as she works directly with ZINO Society COO, Rob Brown, to support and facilitate the entrepreneur processes for ZINO Society.  In the photo above, she is reviewing and compiling the green screening evaluation sheets which the screeners and coaches fill out during our monthly screening meetings.  These sheets provide valuable feedback and suggestions to the entrepreneurs to help them make their brief presentations more understandable and compelling, which is one of the most important support services we can offer.
Yesterday, our screeners and coaches met to view the entrepreneur presentations live that made it through the first electronic screening round for our upcoming ZINO Life Investment Forum.    Each of the entrepreneurs had seven minutes to present followed by two minutes of question and answer and input.  See photos of some of the screeners and coaches above and as they diligently fill out the green evaluation sheets.
Taking into consideration all the feedback and input we receive from the screeners and coaches, we ultimately choose who to feature at our investment meetings and forums and then line up those entrepreneurs with individual coaches who will help them polish and finesse their presentations so they can be most effective in getting their messages across.  It is interesting to note that though most entrepreneurs think they do not need or want coaching, but since we insist on it, almost every entrepreneur comes back to us saying that their coaching was invaluable to them in making their message stronger and clearer.  It is Kayla’s role to match up entrepreneurs with coaches to ensure that each presenting ZINOpreneur has that important support.
On the day of the event, each presenting ZINOpreneur will have a special ribbon on his or her nametag showing that they are presenting so that potential investors can easily connect with them.  Following the event, Kayla will once again communicate to the entrepreneurs sharing any input from the event attendees and sharing any contact information for those members or guests who expressed interest in any specific investment opportunities.
Our ZINO Society screeners and coaches deserve huge kudos for the important service they provide these entrepreneurs!
