A Birthday Bouquet of Food and Glass

Kevin & Katie Laramore in the Chihuly Garden and Glass
On Tuesday evening, Katie and Kevin Laramore and I celebrated daughter, Katie's birthday beginning with a glass adventure at the new Chihuly Garden and Glass museum followed by dinner at Poppy on Capital Hill where Ken joined in the celebration.

Ken and I had attended an opening event for the Chihuly Garden and Glass and I couldn't wait to show it to Katie and Kevin.  I went online and bought our tickets so we wouldn't have to wait in line.  It turned out to not be an issue since we easily parked with the Space Needle valet parking (reduced parking fee with museum ticket) and entered the museum at a time when there were not alot of others going through at the same time.

Katie enjoyed pointing out some of the collections that she had previously seen at the Chihuly Boathouse including the Indian blanket collection and Dale's Indian basket and glass collection.  We proceeded through the collection admiring the haunting Neon Forest, the Mille Fiori exhibit, the Boats and Floats, the Glass Ceiling, Seaforms, the Chandelier Collection and more with a new visual treasure awaiting us around every corner.

We also meandered through the outside garden appreciating the colorful displays of glass that looked as if they had grown right in the garden.  In addition to the big yellow orb of twisted snake-like glass, one of my favorites is a very tall neon green glass tree that looks like it is a cactus.

Happy Birthday, Katie!
Once we had sated our visual appetites, it was time for us to go to Poppy, to sate our culinary appetites.  Katie had requested Poppy for her birthday dinner, and this is just the type of food that Ken loves; lots of little plates with very interesting flavors and taste profiles.  After sharing an order of the famous Eggplant Fries drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sea salt, each of us ordered a different "Seven Item Thali" which came on large individual platters with seven separate small, assorted size ramekins displaying the food.  My particular order included Neah Bay Salmon with Seabeans, Bacon and Pinot Noir Fennel Sauce, Spring Garlic Soup with Parsley Walnut Pesto, Radish & Charred Spring Onion Salad, Snap Peas with Cumin and Ginger, Asparagus with Sage and Lemon Thyme, Fennel Anise-Hyssop Pickle and Nigella-Poppy Naan.  The flavors were fantastic and I loved the fact that each item was a small portion so eating the meal was actually doable.  We all had to keep admiring and tasting the different dishes on the rest of the platters in our group, so my taste buds were definitely sated by the end of the meal.  Amazing food and flavors!  Poppy owner Jerry Traunfeld works magic with colors, flavors and visual impact.

We had a delightful server, Madeline Puckette, who was extremely knowledgable about wine.  By the end of the evening, we had learned that she also has a company called Wine Folly which is an online wine show and includes wine articles and tutorials.  Madeline has actually met with Kate DesRosier, ZINO Society Dealflow and Operations Manager, about the possibility of pitching to ZINO Society members and guests at some point in the future.  Another example of what a small world we live in!

At the end of the evening, Jerry came to the table to present to Katie a personalized, signed copy of his new cookbook, The Herbal Kitchen: Cooking with Fragrance and Flavor.  It was full of beautiful food photography and fascinating recipes.  Since Katie is totally passionate about cooking and preparing unusual new food items, it was the perfect gift!

Happy Birthday, Katie!!
