Annual December Birthday Club Luncheon

Jan Rogers in her elegant hat
This week the Ladies Birthday Club lunched together in the stately Georgian Room at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel to celebrate the December birthdays of Jan Rogers, Londi Burnett and me.  Attending this year in addtition to the birthday girls, were Suzy Krabbe, Joyce McCallum and Diane Kuenster and of course they got stuck with paying the bill!

It is always so much fun to see which old photos Diane will find and include in each of our cards.  The really good news is that Diane and I have been friends for over thirty years, so she has some really great photos of when we were all younger and thinner!  I am still very curious to see her filing system because she always comes up with wonderful photos of our activities and adventures together over the years.  How does she find them?

Birthday girl, Jan, looked smashing in her elegant black hat and we were especially pleased to be able to celebrate Londi's 80th birthday.  Londi shared stories of when she was in high school and college and it was fascinating to have her describe them as if they were only yesterday.  And when you look at beautiful Londi, it is very hard to believe that she is really 80 years old!

Here is hoping that we will all look as good as Londi does when we reach 80 years old!  Happy birthday friends!

A Comedic Birthday Dinner

Katie Laramore and Troy Clark save a parking space.
On Sunday, my daughter Katie and husband Kevin Laramore arranged to take Ken and me along with Sean Hatch and Troy Clark to Ethan Stowell's new restaurant on Capital Hill, Rione XIII, to celebrate my birthday.  Katie sent a flurry of brief text messages to me and Sean to make all the arrangements.  And as we all know, because of their brevity and sometimes incomprehensible abbreviations, text messages are often a challenging communications tool.  At one point, I thought she had cancelled the whole evening whereas she had meant to say that she was only cancelling a portion of the afternoon.

Kevin Laramore, as valet.
She planned an early dinner because she thought she would be bringing her two young sons, three-year-old Cutter and eighteen-month-old Bode to the celebration too.  So our instructions were to meet them at Sean and Troy's home in Madison Park for a cocktail at 3:30 pm and then proceed to dinner at Rione XIII.  As it actually turned out, Kevin's parents, Jill & Rick Laramore offered to take the boys for the evening so the dinner turned out to be for adults only.  This was a good thing since it turned out that the restaurant is really not set up to be child friendly.

It was pouring rain when Ken and I pulled up in front of Sean and Troy's dark house.  Their home is always decorated perfectly for each season and though we could see the red ornaments hanging in their courtyard trees, none of the Christmas lights were on and the blow-up holiday Shrek lay in a limp lump in the courtyard.  Katie called us on my cell phone to say to stay dry and not get out of the car and that she was trying to locate Sean and Troy.  Just a few minutes went by and she called again to say that she had just reached Troy and that they had been in the garage so we should go ahead and come inside.

We met Katie and Kevin in the dark courtyard and then trooped into Sean and Troy's house ready for our pre-dinner cocktail.  Troy seemed confused as he opened the door into their dark house and hung our coats in the closet.  Finally, we asked where is Sean and Troy responded that he was in Washington D.C.  At that point, we finally figured out that when Katie had texted Sean about dinner on Sunday, he assumed she meant the following Sunday!

Making a wish!
So at that point Katie decided that we should just kidnap Troy and all go on to the restaurant and arrive just a little early.  Of course it is virtually impossible to find parking on Capital Hill and when we arrived, I was trying to get Ken as close to the entrance as possible so he wouldn't have far to walk and finally parked halfway into a no parking zone.

We then spent the next hour watching the street and each time a car pulled out, Kevin, taking the role of valet, would run outside and move our car into a more favorable position until about the fourth time he moved the car, he was able to pull up right in front of the restaurant into the space that Katie and Troy were saving for him.

Loved the chandeliers!
The restaurant interior is comfortable, yet sophisticated. The food and service were both excellent.  For an appetizer, we shared deep fried risotto mozzarella balls with housemade tomato sauce and we virtually licked the plates clean.  Katie and I shared an order of fresh pasta with a carbonara sauce and Ken ordered sweetbreads which none of us wanted to share.  He said they were great but we were not interested in trying them.

We ran into friend Elisabeth Bodal along with her family and they seemed to be enjoying Rione XIII just as much as we did.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Atop the Bellevue Towers

Diane Kuenster and Christine Bloch
Last night the Party Curmudgeon and I attended a fun holiday party in the 42nd floor penthouse of the Bellevue TowersChristine Bloch and Joel Jackson had purchased the party at an auction and shared it with friends to celebrate the season.

The guest list was stellar including the Grinch, Katy Perry, Dr. Ruth, and Santa Claus as well as Diane & Gordon Kuenster, Jo Krueger & Ron Savage, Rebecca Campbell, Gayle Zawaideh, Rebecca Brown, Darren Bloch and many others.

Ken aka Party Curmudgeon, Ron & Jo Savage
The view was of course spectacular; both outside the windows and inside the party with sequins and glitz and glamor making the people-watching a real treat!  Loved those very tall silver shoes that Christine was wearing along with her cute sequined mini-skirt!   Another friend at the party said she was going home and cutting off every one of her skirts that very evening.  The only fashion faux pas I saw was Dr. Ruth's white shoes!  It is after Labor Day after all!!

Everyone also enjoyed eyeing the spectacular floral arrangements, noshing on delicious hors d'oeuvres and sipping beautiful cocktails in sugar-rimmed glasses (well maybe the men were not drinking these, but many of the women were!).  The Party Curmudgeon pretty much stuck to drinking wine only while I enjoyed a Lemon Drop.  It really is all about the sugar on the rim for me!

Dr. Ruth, Katy Perry and Rebecca Campbell
It was definitely a lovely holiday celebration!  Ho!  Ho!  Ho!  Thank you Christine and Joel

The Halls were Decked with Boughs of Holly

Cathi and Ken at the Luvera staircase
Yesterday, Ken and I enjoyed a beautiful drive to Lita & Paul Luvera's exquisite home on the water in Gig Harbor for their festive holiday celebration with friends.  There were definitely boughs and swags of evergreen and holly decorating both the exterior and interior of their beautiful home.

Ken Hatch, Chloe & Lance Mueller,
Bonnie & Bill Schallert
Their decorations are to me the quintessential, perfect decorations for the holidays.  Whenever I see their home at Christmastime, I totally get into the Christmas and holiday spirit.  There are Christmas trees in most of the rooms and decorations everywhere so it is a feast for the eyes.  In addition to sumptuous food buffets in the dining room and on the terrace, there was also live music including a piano, saxophone and a vocalist in the living room.  Even Ken the Party Curmudgeon, loves to go to this party and got into the holiday spirit!

Entrance to the Luvera home decked for the season
It was wonderful to see Paul up and around greeting their guests and Lita looked absolutely beautiful with her warm, welcoming smile!  It was also fun to connect with friends including Mark Levine, Bonnie & Ron Elgin, Chloe & Lance Mueller, Ellen Bakke, Karan Dannenberg, Bonnie & Bill Schallert, Leena & Mel Sturman, Gary Gayton and scores of others.

Snuffin's is the Luvera's caterer of choice and they do such a spectacular job with this party.  One of my favorite things at the party were tiny glasses of milkshakes topped with a spritz of whipped cream which Snuffin's owner, Sharon Snuffin, called Kahlua Polar Bears and Eggnog Polar Bears.  She shared her secret of making them and I can't wait to serve them for dessert on Christmas Eve!

Our hosts, Lita & Paul Luvera

I am now most definitely in the Christmas spirit and can't wait to put on the Christmas music and start working on the Christmas cards!  Ho!  Ho!  Ho!
